2024

The ESPR enters into force

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation ((EU) 2024/1781) establishes the legal basis for the digital product passport.

20 July 2026

The EU DPP registry is live

On 20 July 2026 the central EU registry of product passports went live ((EU) 2026/1778) — an index/directory, the passport content stays with the manufacturer. From 19 July, large companies may no longer destroy unsold textiles and footwear.

2026 (planned)

Iron and steel

A first-priority ESPR category: recycled content, carbon footprint and production route (blast furnace, electric arc, direct reduction). The delegated act is expected in 2026; actual compliance falls due about 18 months later.

2026 (planned)

DPP service provider framework

Under the ESPR mandate, the requirements and possible certification of DPP service providers are expected to be developed — the details and exact timing remain open. Construction follows a separate track: there the governing act belongs to the CPR's own DPP system.

18 February 2027

Battery passport — the first mandatory DPP

Mandatory for EV, light means of transport (LMT) and larger industrial batteries under a separate regulation ((EU) 2023/1542).

2027

Aluminium and textiles

The first ESPR delegated acts arrive for these categories: recycled content, carbon footprint, material origin.

2028

Furniture

Requirements for material origin, repairability, recyclability and carbon footprint.

2030+

Electronics and beyond

Electronics, tyres, mattresses, chemicals and household appliances follow in stages (electronics at the earliest after the 2028 review).

The years below mark the delegated-act / priority year, not the year of mandatory application: actual compliance (a finished passport on your products) typically becomes mandatory ~18 months later, between 2028–2031 depending on the category — which is why it pays to prepare ahead.

Manufacturers

A passport must be created and maintained for every product — a prerequisite for market access and customer trust.

Importers

Products imported into the EU must have a valid, accessible passport — reducing the risk of penalties.

Retailers

You may only offer products that have a valid passport, easily accessible to the customer.

DPP service provider

The back-end system that manages passports on behalf of manufacturers — this is what Veridyn provides.

New Battery 23 September 2026

BatteryPass conformance: what it means when a system passes all 11 tests

We ran the BatteryPass-Ready conformance suite against our own live system: 11 of 11 green. We cover what the 11 tests actually check, why a green validator proves nothing on its own (it stays green even when only half of the official data model is there), seven pitfalls that derail a rollout, and seven questions worth asking your provider.

Understand the rules — in plain language

Practical DPP & ESPR guides: what is mandatory, from when and exactly what data you need.

Features

Everything you need for the EU DPP

One tool that delivers product transparency today and compliance tomorrow.

Schema-driven, multilingual passport

New fields and categories with no coding — just configuration, ready for evolving regulation.

  • Labels in 24 EU languages, with an automatic language switcher
  • Customisable appearance — dark & light

Versioned & tamper-evident

Every change is a retained version with a cryptographic hash chain — with a report you can hand to the market surveillance authority.

  • A full, traceable change history
  • Tamper detection in the chain

Layered access & certificates

Public, legitimate-interest and authority tiers — market surveillance can see the non-public data too.

  • No-sign-in, expiring access links
  • Attached PDF certificates (OEKO-TEX, CE…)

GS1 & traceability

A standardised GS1 Digital Link URL and embedded JSON-LD — machines and platforms understand it too.

  • A printable, vector QR for every product
  • Model / production batch / individual unit (AI 10/21)

Integration & import

Connect your webshop or ERP to Veridyn — and upload thousands of products in a few clicks.

  • OpenAPI REST API + signed, retried webhooks
  • Bulk import: CSV · Excel · JSON · XML — or from a single API call
  • Sandbox test account: you don't trial the rollout on live data

Measurement & collaboration

See how complete your catalogue is and who encounters your products — as a team.

  • Compliance dashboard, scan analytics + counterfeit-clone alerts
  • A team with roles and permissions

Counterfeit-resistant identification

A made-up serial number does not get a genuine-looking passport: the page says we do not recognise it, and a machine request gets an error.

  • Unknown serial or batch: a visible warning, not silent model data
  • An error code for machine requests — the receiving system cannot file the false identifier either
  • Clone alert: when one serial number is scanned from unusually many places

Nothing disappears without a trace here either

If our staff signs in to your account, it is logged — and if they touch the data, it stays marked in your own change history.

  • Every provider sign-in in a separate, append-only log
  • A version written by the provider is marked separately in the change history
  • Visible in the authority report too — the declaration was not written by the manufacturer alone

Data does not pile up forever

We do not just promise retention periods: a scheduled clean-up carries them out, with a run log.

  • The scan log is deleted automatically after 24 months
  • Technical logs live for days, not years
  • The product passport and the audit trail, however, are never deleted automatically

How it works

Three steps to a finished passport

No developer needed. Enter the data and the system handles the rest.

1

Add your product

A schema-driven form walks you through the fields — or upload a CSV with multiple products.

2

You get a passport + QR

The public, multilingual passport page and the printable QR code are generated instantly.

3

Share it, print it

Put the QR on the label. The customer scans it and sees the product's entire story.

One product passport = one product type (e.g. "Organic cotton tee" — any number of units). That is what the plans measure. Production-batch and individual-unit passports are unlimited on every paid plan — because which level you need is decided by the regulation that applies to you, not by our price list. (Fair use.)

Under the ESPR, non-compliance can lead to fines and even exclusion from public procurement — the annual fee of a product passport is a fraction of that.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the product passport

The essentials about the EU DPP and Veridyn.

What is the Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
A standardised, digitally accessible data sheet about the product: material composition, origin, environmental footprint, repairability, recyclability and life cycle. With a QR code, anyone — consumer, authority, recycler — can access trustworthy data.
Why is the EU introducing it?
For the circular economy and transparency. The ESPR ((EU) 2024/1781) aims to make products' sustainability data uniformly and verifiably accessible throughout their entire life cycle.
Who will it be mandatory for, and from when?
In stages, by category, per the ESPR working plan: the first wave is iron/steel, aluminium and textiles (delegated acts expected 2026–2027), then furniture, and finally electronics and others after 2030. Batteries fall under a separate regulation (18 February 2027). Actual compliance typically becomes mandatory ~18 months after the delegated act — so the finished passport is due from 2028, typically between 2028–2031 depending on category.
How is the battery passport different?
It falls under the separate battery regulation ((EU) 2023/1542) rather than the ESPR, and it is the first DPP that is mandatory in practice — from 18 February 2027 for EV, light means of transport (LMT) and larger industrial batteries. Veridyn emits the CEN-CENELEC JTC24 data model and passes all 11 tests of the BatteryPass-Ready conformance suite.
What happens if we don't comply?
Under Article 74 of the ESPR, Member State penalties must be "effective, proportionate and dissuasive" — this can mean fines and even exclusion from public procurement. The exact amounts are set by national law.
How can I prepare right now?
Assess the affected product lines, gather your material and supply-chain data, and choose a passport management system. With Veridyn you can create your first standardised passport in minutes — free to try.
Why are German and other EU buyers already asking for it?
Many large companies build DPP data into their supplier requirements years before it becomes mandatory. Those who are ready sooner gain a competitive edge in the supply chain.
What happens after the beta, and what does it cost?
During the beta every feature is free, up to 100 model passports, with no credit card. At the end of the beta your account moves to the matching plan, with a founder discount: the passports you have created stay public and exportable, and those above the plan limit switch to read-only. Prices are indicative and net — the final list will be announced before the beta closes. Read more →
What if we switch providers? Does the printed QR code still work?
We designed for the exit. The QR carries a GS1 Digital Link, so the identifier belongs to the product, not to us, and the data can be exported in standard form at any time. Your own domain (e.g. passport.yourbrand.com) is included from the Pro plan at no extra cost — but it is still in preparation: today every QR encodes veridyn.eu. Codes printed today permanently carry veridyn.eu, so for those a switch depends on our redirect; if you are printing in volume, it is worth waiting for your own domain. If we ever shut down: at least 90 days' notice, a full data export, and public URLs stay reachable for at least 24 months, or we redirect them with no time limit to a resolver you nominate. Read more →
Who can see our data? Can trade secrets go into the passport?
The passport is layered: anyone sees the public level, while the legitimate-interest and authority levels are only for those you send a link to — and those links expire and can be revoked. Non-public fields never appear on the public page, and they are left out of the machine-readable (JSON-LD) output too. Read more →
How do we connect it to our own systems (ERP, PLM, web shop)?
Over a REST API documented with an OpenAPI spec, using an API key. You can load products in bulk from a single call (up to 500 per request, with a per-row report) or from a file: CSV, Excel, JSON, XML. Changes are pushed as signed webhooks, and you get a separate sandbox test account so the rollout is not tried on live data. Read more →
Do we need a GTIN or GS1 membership?
Not required. The passport works without a GTIN: it gets its own unique URL and a printable QR code. If you do have a GTIN, it is worth entering — the passport then also resolves as a GS1 Digital Link (/01/{GTIN}), which fits retail chains and in-store scanners. Read more →
Is the EU registry live, and does it have to follow the standards?
The Commission activated the central DPP registry on 20 July 2026; its operation is governed by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778. Six harmonised standards for the product passport were cited on 15 July 2026 (by Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1736) — covering data carriers, identifiers, storage and the lifecycle API. Veridyn builds on these; the two standards on access management and authentication are not yet harmonised. Read more →
